How to choose a Wedding officiant

One that feels right to you.

You may spend months choosing a venue, a photographer, and the music for your wedding. But there is one person who will stand with you during the moment you actually get married: your officiant.

So how do you choose the right one?

Start by thinking about the ceremony you want. Would you like something traditional? Warm and relaxed? Religious, spiritual, or nonreligious? Do you want your guests to hear the story of how you met and what you love about each other? There is no single correct answer. The ceremony should feel like it belongs to the two of you.

Then have a conversation with a prospective officiant. You should feel comfortable asking questions and sharing your ideas. Notice whether the officiant listens. Are they interested in getting to know you, or are they mainly describing a ceremony they have already decided to perform?

I believe couples should know what will be said on their wedding day. When I create a custom ceremony, we work on it together. You can see the script, suggest changes, and make sure the words sound right to you. Your wedding is too important for surprises that you never asked for. After all it is YOUR day.

It also helps to talk about the practical details. Ask what is included, whether a rehearsal is available, when the officiant will arrive, and how the marriage paperwork is handled. Clear answers now make it easier to relax on the day itself.

Finally, trust how you feel after that conversation. Your officiant will guide you through an emotional moment in front of the people closest to you. Choose someone who makes you feel heard, respected, and at ease.

If you’re planning a wedding in Calgary or the surrounding area, I’d be glad to hear what you have in mind. Tell me about the two of you and the kind of ceremony you’re hoping for. We can take it from there.
